COMPASS ACADEMY STEM High School
2013
New School Design
Compass Academy High School was originally a 1960's Junior High School constructed of concrete tee roof and concrete block walls. During the 70's and 80's it had significant additions and remodels which removed the windows. It became a dark windowless maze that made open learning environments nearly impossible. Design West was tasked with opening up the existing facility to create collaborative learning spaces that would create a 21st Century environment in an existing high school and accomplish it under a very aggressive schedule demand.
Compass Academy is now and "Open and Inviting Learning Environment" where the students look forward to attending school, and teachers have the freedom to facilitate learning with their own unique pedagogical approach.
