Wasatch Elementary School
2020
Addition/Remodel
Nestled at the base of Mt. Ogden, the Wasatch Elementary School community was in need of new learning spaces to
accommodate their growing student population while providing 21st century learning opportunities for the entire student body. Additionally, they needed the current elementary school to remain open during the construction process and did not want
to disrupt the sites existing green space that has beautiful views of the nearby mountains and serves as a gathering space for
community events.
With these constraints in mind, an addition was developed for the school in tandem with targeted interior renovations of existing shared spaces. The addition seeks to complement the Mid-century modern aesthetic of the existing buildings in the
neighborhood, while providing open and collaborative learning environments in the interior that not only meet the growing
enrollment, but also afford new types of progressive learning environments for students, teachers and staff.
Through exploring the most pressing and desired communal design outcomes in workshops and town hall meetings, the
Wasatch community was able to play a vital role in aiding the design team. Ultimately, the team provided a master plan to
revitalize the existing school while simultaneously enhancing it
with the construction of new learning spaces.
